How To Back Up Your Web Hosting Files in cPanel

Get Web Hosting With cpanelBy Donald C Thomas

Backing up your files regularly is hugely important. I cannot count the number of times I have seen someone’s hard work be basically wasted due to them not having a backup. Some hosts offer free weekly / daily backups, but for those of you who’s hosts don’t, or you wish to have backups produced in closer intervals, this page is for you.

We’ll get started by clicking the ‘Backups’ icon in the ‘Files’section of your cPanel.

The following page will have a list of several options you can choose from, depending what you wish to back up.

Full Backup

A full backup will, as implied, create a full backup of the entirety of your cPanel account. That means emails, databases, files.. everything is backed up and compressed into one file. To create a full backup, click ‘Download or Generate a Full Site Backup’. When selecting a backup directory, I suggest using the ‘home’ option, unless you have another server in which to have the file backed up to via FTP. You can also input an email address to receive notification upon completion of the backup. When the backup has completed, you can go back to ‘Download or Generate a Full Site Backup’ button. There, you will be presented with a list of backups and a link to download them to your local machine.

Tip: Keep only one copy of a backup on your account at a time, otherwise, each time you make a backup, the copies of the backup will be backed up and take up double the space they should.

Partial Backups

Download a Home Directory Backup

This will download any files you have in your cPanel account. This does not include any MySQL databases.

Download a MySQL Database Backup

This will backup every MySQL database that is associated with your account.

Download Email Forwarders

As you may assume, this will backup and download any forwarders you may have setup.

Download Email Filters

Just like the forwarders, only with your filters.

I would also go for simple backup service. I don’t want to spend so much.
