Will changing to HostGator affect my URLs and page rank?
Switching to HostGator
Question:
I want to switch from my current web host to Host Gator, but because my current urls have page rank, I want to keep the same urls. So can I for instance have these same urls in Host Gator that I already have. For example here are two of my urls:
http://www.dotdeb.com
http://www.dotdeb.com/arcade.php
Answer:
Switching to another host does not affect your URLs and Google page rank SO LONG as you publish the EXACT same content with the EXACT same file names to your new host.
If you’re using a website development tool like Dreamweaver or other publisher on your computer, then just publish your site to your new host.
If you’re using WordPress, you’ll need to do a MyPHPAdmin export of your current database, install WordPress on your new host, then import that export. That’s because WordPress blogs are not regular html pages. Page and post content is stored in the database and then fetched and rendered into a “web page” using your theme as a template when someone accesses them. You’ll also need to FTP the entire wp-content folder from the old host down to your computer and then upload it, over-writing the existing stuff on the new host.
How to Move a WordPress Blog to Another Host
Many web hosts offer free migration to your new account. Don’t forget to also recreate any CRON jobs, emails, and auto-responders on your account.
