Web Hosting Company Closed Down – Dude, Where’s My Website?

Need to know what to do about website. Hosting company has closed down with no warning. What happens now? Is the website and domain name lost? What happens to domain name and website when hosting company closes down?
Answer:
If you got a free domain name with that hosting plan, you’re screwed because they were the Registrant on the name, not you.
If you never downloaded any backups of your website or blog, you’re screwed. However, if you used a website builder on your computer and then published the files to your hosting account, then you still “have your website” on your computer. You can just publish those files to a new host.
If you registered the domain name at a registrar and paid for it yourself, then you are the owner of the domain name and you can host it at any web host that you like simply by changing the nameservers to point to the new host.
Web hosting companies don’t typically close down. If they do, you prolly got screwed by a reseller. Resellers are people just like you and me that rent server space from real hosting companies, partition it up into smaller packages, sell it at crazy prices and call it “web hosting”. But when their hosting term is getting ready to expire and they realize they didn’t make any money and can’t afford the renewal fees for another year, they quit and there goes your website.
WARNING! If you are looking at a hosting plan that does not have unlimited hosting space, but rather has web space restrictions is terms of GB’s or worse, MB’s, STAY AWAY FROM IT! You cannot trust that they will be there in the future.
