iPage Web Hosting and Videos – Avoid copyright infringement & bandwidth problems

Question:

Ok so I just learned a little about copyright infringement from taking youtube videos off of youtube and placing them on my website. Well how do I know which ones it would be ok to put on my website and which ones I could get in trouble for?

Also had someone say if I uploaded to many videos I would have a pretty outstanding bandwidth bill, but my hosting is through iPage, and I’m pretty sure when I signed up it said unlimited bandwidth. If this is true then I have nothing to worry about right?

Answer:

Unlimited bandwidth at iPage means within a normal range of usage. You’re on a shared hosting account which means you are sharing a web server with a bunch of other people. If your activities are hogging server resources, you risk getting your account suspended because you’re slowing down the accounts of all the other users.

You don’t want to download the videos and stream them from your iPage site. What you want to do is embed the YouTube videos. When you find a video you want to put on your site, click the Share button under the video and then click the Embed button to get the code to put on your site. There are several different coding options. Pick the one that works best for you. If you’re embedding code into a WordPress post, you’ll need to use a plugin so it doesn’t strip the code out of the HTML.

Once the code is embedded into your iPage website page, you’ll see the video on your page, but it streams from the YouTube site as opposed from your hosting account. Do it that way and you won’t run into any bandwidth issues.

If the person who posted the video on YouTube posted copyrighted video, such as a recorded TV show, YouTube will pull the video from the site and your embedded link will no longer work.
