Setting Up Secure FTP On BlueHost

Question:

I want to use FTP to my web hosting account securely, but I don’t understand how to set it up.  I’m using BlueHost.

Answer:

  1. Download an FTP program that supports Secure FTP like CuteFTP.
  2. Enable SSH/Shell access on your account by going into your BlueHost control panel.  In the Security section, click on the SSH/Shell Access icon.  Just follow the instructions.  You may have to contact support to have your account verified to make sure that you are you and not someone else hacking into your account.
  3. Once SSH/Shell access is enabled on your account
    1. Click the “Manage SSH Access” button.
    2. Choose “SSH access enabled” from the drop-down menu.
    3. Click the “Submit” button.
  4. Login to your SFTP program to set up your site.  In CuteFTP on the Type tab, for Protocol Type use FTP with SSL (Auth SSL – Explicit) and use port 22.
