How do you register domain names?

How do you register domain names so that they’re legally yours w/o going through an attorney? Isn’t there a “body” that over sees and registers the name?

Answer:  Are you talking about trademarked names like say you create a new product call XYZ Super Stuff and you want to registered the domain xyzsuperstuff.com and protect that name so no one else can register a domain using that name in their domain name?  Click here for trademark basis from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
