Viewing Images with iPage Web Hosting

Question: I have a website desolatemedia.net and I bought my domain through ipage.com and i would like to use it to host images such as other sites like photobucket do. But when i upload pictures to my file manager when i try to view them it tells me that the directory has no index file. even when i create an index file it still gives me the same error. Can someone please help me out?

Answer:

In order to see the images, you have to specifically search on the domain name along with the image’s file name.  If the an image name is pic1.jpg, then to see it, you have to go desolatemedia.net/pic1.jpg  You can’t just dump all the images into a folder and then go desolatemedia.net/mypics/ and expect to see them. If you want to do that, you have to build a web page called index.html, stick it in the image folder, then insert the image files into the page with your page builder or manually code the full path to the images.  I’m a little confused by your lack of knowledge regarding this when your website is about graphic and web design.  BTW, “webdesign” is not one word.

Photo Gallery Applications

Photobucket uses a gallery-type interface.  In the iPage control panel in Scripts and Add-ons, go to the SimpleScripts software installer.  There you’ll find some photo gallery software that you can install on your website.  Then just link to it from your menu.

Here are the Photo Gallery scripts on iPage.

  • Coppermine – Coppermine is a multi-purpose fully-featured and integrated web picture gallery script.
  • Gallery – Gallery photo sharing gives you an intuitive way to blend photo management seamlessly into your own website whether you’re running a small personal site or a large community site.
  • Zenphoto – Zenphoto is a standalone CMS for multimedia focused websites. Has support for images, video and audio formats, and the Zenpage CMS plugin provides a fully integrated news section (blog) and custom pages to run entire websites. This makes Zenphoto the ideal CMS for personal websites of illustrators, artists, designers, photographers, film makers and musicians.
  • Pixelpost – Pixelpost, a small photoblog application that’s a no-brainer to set up and use. It’s perfect for anyone wishing to regularly post their photos on the web like a blog.
  • 4images – 4images is a powerful web-based image gallery management system. Features include comment system, user registration and management, password protected administration area with browser-based upload and HTML templates for page layout and design.
