How do I configure the “HOSTS” file?
Question:
I can’t get on .webs.com sites…someone said to delete the host file “webs.com” and then it would work? idk
please helpp
Answer:
Why would Webs.com be blocked in your hosts file unless you put it there? Whoever was giving you that information may have wanted you to delete your host file so it screws up your computer. Some people just plain suck.
A more likely place would be in your browser’s security settings. Make sure Webs.com is not a blocked site.
Another option could be your browser, itself. If you’re running an old version of IE they could block it. I’m running IE8, but something’s jacked up in my settings where websites think I’m running IE6 and they block me. kohls.com and dishnetwork.com are two of them. I have to use a different browswer.
You DO NOT delete your host file. you edit. You have to edit it as Admin, so right-click a TEXT editor to Run As Admin. Then you can open it up.
The host file is located in “C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc” its just called hosts, you can open it in notepad (make sure you open it as an administrator, otherwise you will not have sufficient permissions to edit it).
The file is formated in:
IP HOST
if “.webs.com” is indeed blocked by the host file, it will be in there. just remove THAT LINE only.
