How come companies can give away free web hosting but not free domain names?

Question:

Saying that web hosting usually costs 5 dollars a month, and domains usually cost 5-10 dollars A YEAR, how come people don’t provide free domains?

Wow, that’s a good question. I never thought of it before. There are tons of top web hosting companies that give away free domain names, but only with the purchase of a hosting plan. I’ve never seen anyone just hand out free domains.
