Building a Blog with GoDaddy’s SmartSpace

Share

Question:

I want to build a blog with WordPress. I have a domain name. Which is the best hosting service?  goDaddy offers something called Smart Space.  I will try them if I don’t get a better suggestion.

Answer:

You can’t put WordPress on GoDaddy‘s SmartSpace.  SmartSpace is very limited in what you can put on it.  Think of SmartSpace as a container, sort of like a photo album page would be for pictures.  On the SmartSpace page, you select which “photos” you’re going to display.  In this case, those “photos” are called pods.  Pods are applications like email, photo management, website, chat, blog and SocialSpace.  The SmartSpace blog is not WordPress, nor can you connect WordPress to SmartSpace.

My advise is to get real web hosting.  Right now iPage is having a massive holiday sale, but it’s going to end some time this Sunday.  You can get full web hosting with unlimited space and tons of free applications like those found in SmartSpace, only better.  You’ll find them in the iPage control panel in the Scripts and Addons section.  There is a 1-click application installer called SimpleScripts and it contains all kinds of cool stuff to put on your site.  If you want a WordPress blog, you’ll find it right there on the left side in SimpleScripts.  To see what else is in the control panel, click this link for an iPage control panel preview.

Oh, about that sale…

  • 1 year for $3.50/mo = $42.00
  • 2 years for $2.95/mo = $70.80
  • 3 years for $2.95/mo = $106.20

Even if you only get the 1 year term, $3.50/mo is an awesome steal for real web hosting.
