Bing Search Engine Optimization Made Easy
If you follow search engine marketing then no doubt you’ve been hearing about Microsoft’s latest search engine release called Bing. Bing promises a new user experience for those surfing the web. This is a pretty necessary rework of Microsoft’s previous search in an effort to compete with both Google and Yahoo. There appears to be more press than ever covering this launch as Microsoft is seeking to make radical changes to their business model.
I seem to be getting a large number of blog readers asking about Bing and what they should be doing to get sites ranked well on this new search engine. This is a common question whenever new search engines are released regarding the methodology they use to rank.. The good news here is that Bing appears to follow many of the same protocols as Google, the world’s leading search engine.
One of the best ways to reverse engineer a given search engine is to do a study of the top ranked website for a specific term. Based on some research that I’ve done and the work of others in the SEO community, it’s pretty clear that this type of analysis provides clues of which criteria weigh most heavily in Bing’s search algorithm. No one will be all that surprised to learn that older domains perform better than newer websites and in bound linking plays a major role in results.
It appears as though Microsoft’s Bing search engine is using many of the same ranking factors as other popular search engines. This is good news simply because optimization of web sites take time and trying to optimize for one search engine over another may provide very mixed results. Bing likes in bound links and that is pretty consistent regardless of which search engine you are trying to improve your organic results for.
Organic search should be at the top of your list. If it is then you know where you need to focus, inbound linking. If you haven’t already focused your efforts on organic search then start with on page optimization. Once your site is formatted appropriately, start with off page optimization and link building.
In addition to focusing on the before mentioned items for influencing search results on Bing and other search engine, consider the value of content. Having fresh content on your site that is engaging and current matters a good deal to search engines seeking to find the most relevant and meaningful content. Keep your eye on developing quality content and updating it on a regular basis.
You might be wondering which search engine you should be optimizing your web site for. Based on what I’ve seen, I’m encouraged by preliminary Bing related findings. I believe that Bing is using many of the same factors that Google uses to evaluate a sites relevance to a search query. As always, focus on white hat methods to optimize your site and follow SEO basics.

I still feel Google has a upper hand in terms of users searching for the information. Bing & Yahoo have agreed to work together and share their technology to rival Google and I liked the new ‘Bing’, however I am still going to stick with Google.
And yeah as you said about Bing following the same tactics as Google does, so does that mean you’ll be automatically ranked well in Bing as well even if you’re only focusing on Google or what?
