NameCheap vs GoDaddy – No Contest
by AJ Farro
It behooves me why anyone would buy domain names at GoDaddy. I think it has a lot to do with the visibility of the company on TV. Advertising works. I still have a handful of names over there, but I transferred most of them away. Here’s how to transfer a domain name from GoDaddy to NameCheap.
When I learned about buying domain names at NameCheap, I felt like GoDaddy had sucker punched me all those years.
.com Domain Name Prices
Every month NameCheap issues a new coupon code for getting a discount on already low pricing on domain names. They don’t publish it. You have to find one. You can always get the new NameCheap coupon code here. Use it as many times as you like throughout the month.
GoDaddy has discounts from time to time, but there’s always some kind of hook. Either you have to buy web hosting with them or buy a bunch of domain names at one time. I don’t know who buys names in bulk. I don’t. When I get a new idea for a domain name I just buy a single domain. Names don’t come to me in “bulk”. And don’t EVER buy web hosting from GoDaddy. There is no subtle way to put this. They will ass rape you on pricing and features. Don’t go there.
NameCheap: $9.69 – .88 coupon = $8.81
GoDaddy: $10.69
WhoIs Protection
Your whois records publicly displays your name, address, email, and phone number. There are two sides of the fence to protecting that personal information. Some say reputable businesses and individuals should remain transparent. I agree, but that’s not the way to implement it. Placing contact forms on your site is the way to do it. If you choose to display more information then do it on an About Us page.
Spammers harvest data from your whois record. By allowing it to remain in the public eye you’re enabling them. Keep it private.
NameCheap: WhoIs Guard is free for the 1st year on all domain names and renews at only $2.88/yr after that. You can enable and re-enable it at anytime without losing it. You can also move it around by disabling it on one domain and use it on another because it’s never tied to one domain.
GoDaddy: Privacy Manager costs $8.99/year and also renews at the same price. There is no free anything. Also, should you disable it, it’s disabled for good. If you want to re-enable it, you’ll have to pay for it again.
Shopping Cart
GoDaddy will sneak things into your shopping cart during the checkout process and you have to remove them before you click that final submit button. Watch out for it. NameCheap doesn’t pull that kind of crap on its customers. Your cart will only contain what you put into it.
In Summary
The next time you go shopping for a .com domain name and privacy protector keep this post in mind. You can get both at NameCheap for $8.81. At GoDaddy the bill will be $19.68. Do the math. You can buy two at NameCheap for less than the price of one at GoDaddy.
