Link Building

Deep Linking for Greater Link Strength

Share

Any SEO consultant will tell you that setting links is one of the most important tasks undertaken to improve search page rankings. As each link pointed towards your page is essentially a “vote” for your page, the more of these you can set – especially from highly ranked pages with high traffic – the better your placement on the search engine results will be.

Link building strategies though, can take a variety of forms depending upon the business type, size and service model. Some of these strategies are quite effective in attracting traffic as well as prospective clients and customers. Link building typically is done through setting them on other blogs, embedding them in articles and by directly requesting link exchanges from other page operators. Most beginning SEO’s though, stick to setting links to their site’s main landing page only. And in doing this, many miss an important opportunity to attract traffic to useful pages and information within their website environment.

“Deep Linking” Web environments are usually comprised of several pages, including the main landing page as well as other detail pages. Organizations will frequently include product pages or pages that are dedicated to a specific product group or family. Optimizing the product page for a unique set of keywords and terms related to the product can attract additional traffic from the internet search engines. Linking directly to these pages is termed a ‘deep link.’

A company selling motor scooter parts might have a product line for accessory items like helmets or ‘scooter’ clothing. A web page within the scooter web environment might highlight these items on a separate product page. This product page could be optimized for ‘scooter helmets’ or other specific terms, leaving the main page to focus on bigger terms – something like ‘scooter parts in Seattle.’

Advantages of Deep Linking Many site owners focus only on the main web page. Deep linking or setting links to the product page can offer many additional opportunities to build traffic and reach potential customers. The search engines will also begin cataloguing your pages individually. Search engines seem to like sites that provide a significant volume of detail in several different pages. Deep linking to the product pages help the search engines understand what that page is about and in the end benefits the site owner by earning good placement on search results.

Deep linking also enables the web operator to highlight other keywords with directly focused content. Newer companies will frequently identify a few smaller product niches, exploit them, generate some traffic and link strength to the product page first. Once some traffic is generated, then attention is given to more competitive keyword phrases. This approach is backwards from conventional wisdom, but has worked on occasion.

Setting Anchor Text for a Deep Link Setting deep links really is no different as setting links to the main landing page. The first task is to identify useful keywords and phrases, optimize the ‘on page’ elements including title, tags and content. After that, external links directly to that page are set using anchor text that mirrors the selected keyword phrases. Because the keyword phrases for a deep linked page will be quite different from those selected for your main page, this expands the opportunity to reach customers searching for different information. (Of course this sounds much easier in concept than it is to implement. The time required to execute an SEO campaign can be significant. )

As you set blog links or embed links in articles you distribute, these same product keywords should appear and be linked back to that product page. A page with the title “scooter safety helmets” would be linked in the blog posts or articles using that exact same phrase. As the page then contains that phrase within the titles and text, the search engines will fully understand the content of that page.

Deep Linking to product pages when building external links either via blogging or embedding them in relevant articles is a necessary part of an effective Search Engine strategy. Most article directories allow setting a couple of links within your article, so there is usually opportunity to link to both the main page as well as one or two product pages. Don’t miss the opportunity to earn a little extra link strength to other parts of the web environment you’ve worked o hard to develop!
