Stopping SPAM At Your Web Hosting Server
Using Box Trapper in CPanel
By Donald C Thomas
BoxTrapper is a wonderful spam elimination tool that is bundled with cPanel. When enabled on an address, anyone sending an email to that address will receive an autoresponse back from the server asking to confirm that they are human and meant to send the email. This keeps the automated spam from hitting your inbox, making your world a happier place. Now, let’s configure boxtrapper.
To get started, click on the ‘BoxTrapper’ icon in the ‘Mail’ section of your cPanel.
You will be taken to a screen that shows each email account you have setup within your cPanel. BoxTrapper is configured on a per address basis, so you can choose which addresses you wish to use it with. Click on the ‘Manage’ link for an account you wish to use BoxTrapper with.
Here, you can enable / disable and configure your BoxTrapper settings for this account.
Configure Settings In this section, you will enter any Email addresses that are forwarding to this account. This will allow them to pass through without the otherwise required verification. When selecting ‘How many days should logs and messages in queue be kept’, I would recommend keeping to a reasonably low number to avoid unnecessary disk usage from large log files. The default of 15 days should be fine. When you ‘Enable Automatic White-listing’ you are agreeing that anyone that passes the verification email test will never have to verify they are human again.
Edit Confirmation Messages
In this section of the configuration, you will set the different messages BoxTrapper will send out. If you make a mistake in editing the predefined responses, you have the option to revert back to the originals.
Edit White/Black/Ignore Lists
From here, you can edit and add to your allow and ignore / black lists. Have someone you never want to receive an email from again (ex-lover maybe?)? Throw their address in your blacklist and never have to give it a second thought.
Forward List
If you have any email addresses you would like to receive forwarded copies of any emails passing through BoxTrapper for this account, you would enter them in this large, blank space and hit save.
Review Log The BoxTrapper log files
Will show you what has happend for the last X days with BoxTrapper on that particular email account. It will let you see any emails that are awaiting verification, have been blacklisted, whitelisted, etc…
Review Queue The BoxTrapper queue
Allows you too see a list of all emails waiting to be verified by the sender. From here, you can select to remove the email from the server or manually whitelist the sender and deliver the email to your inbox.
